For me, it’s been too quiet lately. It started snowing on Saturday, a week and a
half ago. Roads were almost impossible
to navigate, especially living at the end of a long, narrow driveway and being
a little remote. But I love the snow and
this was to be an adventure... an excuse to play and not work.

But then we lost power last Thursday. It was dark and very cold. We couldn’t even leave the house for the
first few days. And when we were able
to, we didn’t go far or stay long because we just couldn’t leave our animals alone
in a house that had become colder inside than the temperature outside.

Layered in long underwear and sweats, multiple long-sleeved
shirts, three pairs of socks, a knee-length down coat with a hood and covered
with blankets I shared with two cats and two dogs, I heard something. And then the bulbs in my chandelier
flickered.

Powerless... I’d

This morning, our home is warm again, the animals are

a team effort led by Rocky (cat) with Pita (dog) and Shadow (dog) bringing up

while we were enjoying the massive snowfall, from the inside looking out, of course. On the telephone in her bedroom, Katie loudly

WAIT! The soft pattering of cat paws
became louder and more deliberate, as Rocky once again encountered his new-found
pal. Rallying the troops, he soon chased
through the dining room, into the family room, back through the hall and into
the bedrooms, playing tag with Pita and Shadow and a not-so-willing little Stuart. Despite my attempts to put this game off

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Shortly
before 5, as one of the team members ran across my sleeping body, obviously
taking a shorter route to catch up with his pal, I decided to join in. Through the hall, into the kitchen, back
around to the dining room, around the boxes (note to self: finish unpacking or throw this stuff into the garage…),
under the coffee table, behind the couch and between the blanket chest, little
Stuart was getting tired. Not so for the
team! With Rocky at one end and my
flashlight and cup at the other end, I attempted to carefully poke a broom
handle between the couch and chest to prod our furry friend into the safety of
the cup. Without hesitation, little
Stuart squeezed himself under the couch, turned around, and poked his twitching
little nose out to see if we were still waiting for him.

chase behind the buffet, under the dining table, back behind the couch, and
under the fireplace hearth led our buddy to safety behind a stack of suitcases
on the floor. Again, with Rocky at one
end and my flashlight and cup at the other end, I was able to slowly and safely
move the stack away from the wall to expose a very tired, nearly sleeping,
little Stuart. Gently, I reached behind
the suitcases and carefully cupped my hand around this little creature and
placed him safely into the plastic cup.

team, totally exhausted from the chase, are fast asleep on their blankets. And hopefully, sometime this morning when
Katie finally rolls over on the couch (where
she fell asleep watching the snow) and is face-to-face with the pickle jar
sitting on the coffee table, her screams won’t awaken a sleeping little Stuart.
Sister Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12061171746200627424noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3971887618243063086.post-2958742002709945522011-11-24T19:33:00.001-08:002011-11-24T20:51:21.304-08:00GIVING THANKS
It’s not that I don’t have plenty to be thankful for, I

I found myself complaining (hopefully to
myself and not others) I never felt like I got my fill of summer.

Sure, there
were a couple of days in the 80s, but my measurement of what kind of summer I’ve
had comes in the form of how many times I’ve watered the lawn and my rose
garden, and whether or not I’ve turned on the fan/air conditioning system we
have.

Sadly, not only have I not watered
the lawn at all, nor have I turned on any fans, I just noticed today that the Styrofoam protector to keep the pipes from freezing is still on
one of the faucets from last year! And
the only reason I watered my rose garden once or twice was to soften the
soil so I could weed the beds.

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods – merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year should be different. This year Americans need to give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese-produced wrapping paper?

Everyone – yes, EVERYONE – gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement. And for those special furry critters – what about pet groomers?

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants – all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint? Remember folks, this isn't about big National chains – this is about supporting your hometown Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

Okay, you were looking for something more personal... Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner-operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre? Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese made lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

It was the thrill of the moment... a little shot at stardom.

And seriously... It really doesn’t matter one way or the other. Really...

We recently took in a truckload of new old treasures to Pacific Galleries in Seattle. Although I promised I would just unload stuff and wouldn’t start decorating and displaying... I lied. “Just a couple more minutes... honestly!” I protested. “I’ll be done soon... seriously... it won’t take long at all!” And I added, “Look! I’m almost done!”

... and then there's the stuff on the roof rack!

And it didn’t... take long that is, depending on how you define “a couple more minutes” and “I’m almost done.”

Then this nice man and this nice woman came into my space and started oohing and ahhing. Isn’t that just the best thing to hear when you have a shop or a mall space or a booth in a show? I think so. The nice man was discussing a really cool hanging light fixture with the nice woman and turns to me and said, “Is this your booth?”

I nodded my head “yes” and he asked me to tell them about the lamp. I explained that I bought two strainers, perhaps originally part of a cream separator from a farm, with the intention of transforming them into a pair of farm chandeliers, of sorts. I told him the toughest part was convincing Al, my lamp genius, that I wanted heavy duty chain, not chandelier chain. “You know... the kind you’d tow a car with!”

Isn’t it funny how the bed of my pickup truck is totally full as is the entire back seat and most of the front seat… and once I put everything in its place, the space seems to absorb everything! How does that happen? Now I need another load!

Here are a few photos:

This is on the right side of our corner, looking up to the “second floor”. This is the biggest space in the mall. I hired one of the very talented dealers to build a four-foot deep ledge on the back walls with a staircase coming down the side.

Talk about a lot of white walls to cover! This was quite the challenge, but I bought a couple of huge drama school backdrops from an auction and hung them on one wall. They aren’t for sale just yet… what else can I put there?

Hmmm… didn’t look so cluttered when I was looking at it but the photo tells another story!

These iron gates are sooo heavy! They say “Pine Acres” and were attached to an enormous rock wall surrounding a house on Pine Lake (Sammamish) from the 1930s.
Love the old iron chair with burlap seat and back (there are three!). Note the 50s RC Cola thermometer on the post behind!

This is absolutely the coolest antique mall! It’s in Seattle, near the stadiums where the Mariners and the Seahawks play. It’s always full and there’s a waiting list for new dealers. There’s a little (or a lot) of everything here and it takes forever to wander around and see it all. Definitely worth the visit!Sister Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12061171746200627424noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3971887618243063086.post-19064195259796491432011-04-11T13:50:00.000-07:002011-04-11T13:50:53.022-07:002nd SaturdayzWHAT A BLAST! SISTERS hasn’t done a show for nearly five years and I was privileged to be invited to be a vendor at 2nd Saturdayz this past Saturday.

This is a local show held in Seattle at Magnuson Park (Sand Point) on the second Saturday of every month. What a group of wonderful vendors! The camaraderie is unbelievable… everyone is positive and upbeat! And the customers make it so much fun as well.

May will mark 2nd Saturdayz one-year anniversary. To celebrate, there will be a ROAD TRIP! The show will be held in Snohomish to allow for the 30 regular dealers as well as several who are on the waiting list to do the show in Seattle.

Amazing what great photos you can take when you show up on show day by 6:00 in the morning! Sorry I didn’t include everyone… but this will give you an idea of what you can look forward to in the upcoming months.

The first show of 2011 was last weekend (March 5th and 6th). I had high hopes of spending a good share of my time taking photos of all the wonderful booths… but I got caught up in shopping instead!

Unfortunately, we didn’t take my pickup truck! But we managed to totally fill every available cubic inch inside an Explorer as well as strapping a huge wooden locker to the top. And even though I insisted I’d be more than happy to hold things on my lap and rest my feet on boxes full of treasures… I kept hearing this faint voice saying, “No more! You don’t need any more!” Harrumph… That’s YOUR opinion, not mine! Oh well, the drive home was 3½ hours so maybe a little comfort was in order.

Two of my favorite vendors include Debi Burton (Ormolulu)... http://ormolulu.blogspot.com/
All the better! With all my decorations packed away and the tree out the door, it was so nice to have yet another celebration! Three ladies with three significant others, eight children, all the responsibilities of momhood… but we finally got together a few days ago for a lovely dinner at a local Italian restaurant. And there were presents!

We all opened our gifts and were totally delighted! I brought my beautiful champagne gift basket home and took photos to share! And I did my best to put everything back very carefully, gathering the cellophane with the elegant silver wired ribbon, so I could take after and before pictures. Yes, after and before pictures.

What more could a girl want? Two bottles of very nice champagne, a magazine entitled “Champagne” (who knew?), a box of divine champagne-infused truffles, an exquisite hand-painted champagne flute, a velvety-black hand towel with glittery silver embroidered snowflakes, an ornament in the form of a miniature champagne bottle and an elegant crystal topped champagne stopper, all swathed in a sparkly black lame’ scarf and presented in a beautiful silver basket!
You’ll be among friends… Mr. and Mrs. Snowman, the delicate strands of heavy old tinsel, my beloved crèche, the glass garland and the feather trees. I will lovingly wrap you in layers of soft tissue to keep you warm and cozy. I will awaken you in autumn, after the last few leaves haves fallen from the trees. You will be the first to emerge along with all the vintage boxes of worn glass ornaments, collections of Tavern candles, strands of lovely antique Noma lights, and the old felt stockings. Close your eyes… sweet dreams…

I always feel a bit in limbo after Christmas and New Year’s are over… it seems like we should be celebrating Spring! I really don’t like to whine… but things can only get better! We started the New Year with a terrible flood. It devastated all seven of the businesses in our little complex. Sure, it had been raining and there was snow melt, but really no warning that we would flood. A fallen tree obstructed the flow of Issaquah Creek into Lake Sammamish. This created a surge of water back up the creek which, in turn, flooded our center around 2:00 a.m. January 8th.

We arrived at 8:00 in the morning to find the parking lot several feet under water. It took almost five hours for the water to recede enough for us to “wade” in to assess the damages. Once we could get closer to our doors, we found 12 inches of standing water throughout the shop.

Six months later, after dealing with soggy carpets we had to remove ourselves, a cracked and chipped concrete floor underneath, black mold growing inside the walls, faulty electrical outlets, a broken heating system, no running water or operational toilets, a v-e-r-y slow insurance company, no help from FEMA or the SBA, and thousands of dollars in lost and damaged inventory, SISTERS moved a few doors down – right next to the antique mall.

We took over a space that used to be a hair/nail salon. We just about completely gutted the inside, removing all of the walls that once formed several “rooms”. The next step was painting the walls and beams, and then glazing the walls. We had to scrub the floor several times (on our hands and knees!) to get them clean and we’ve added several area rugs to soften the look. The hardest part was deciding where all the shop fixtures were to be placed. After 14 years in one location, we had to start all over… layer upon layer upon layer. But this was the fun part and we couldn’t wait! At least that’s what we kept telling ourselves.

I did this all by myself!

One month later, during a routine physical and mammogram, I learned that somehow I had the big “C”. Me? Impossible! I eat well, work hard, have a great attitude, and I’m as healthy as can be. Another mammogram, a few ultrasounds, and an MRI confirmed it. I kept the news from my family until after my son’s wedding. Two weeks before my scheduled surgery, I told family and friends and assured them that all would be fine.

On September 15th, I had a lumpectomy (partial mastectomy). Part of the procedure also involved removal of three lymph nodes under my right arm. Thanks to a great surgeon and wonderful team at Virginia Mason Seattle, I came through with flying colors! In less than an hour after my surgery, I was out of the hospital and on my way home. I am thrilled that other than being a little more tired than usual, I have not had any pain or any problems whatsoever. I haven’t even taken a Tylenol! Doctor’s orders are to take it easy for a week… I’m trying, but still need to take care of things. It’s hard to sit on the couch looking at laundry that needs folding and wondering when the last time was that I dusted the furniture and washed the windows. (I returned to the shop Saturday afternoon and it was wonderful to be back!)

And now back to SISTERS… It’s a wonderful location! The shop is bright and cheery with lots of windows and a huge covered area outside. We’ve had great fun filling the patio with plants and birdhouses, vintage iron tables and chairs, bird baths and Adirondack chairs, lawn furniture and ladders, benches and old swings.

We have lots of new (old) things and as usual… we never stop buying! The inside of the shop is filled with sunshine and we often don’t even turn on the lights! We’ve “divided” SISTERS into sections reminiscent of the old shop. The cottage area is on the east side – again, lots of windows and all the things that make a cottage a home (or is it, make a home a cottage?). We have lots of things that are “lodgey” or camp style, as well as the more refined treasures including sterling and crystal, books, china and ironstone, American pottery, art and mirrors, vintage clothing and linens, and tons of jewelry! We are still passionate about chandeliers and lamps as well as vintage iron furniture.

Remember… We have everything you never knew you always wanted! ™

One of the sweetest vintage iron sets we've had!

Just being silly...

How many of you remember these things?

WOW! Thanks to our wonderful property manager, Bryan Briscoe, for allowing us to utilize this space for our "stuff" while we wait for the clean-up crew to rip up the soaked carpet and cut out at least two feet of drywall!

What a challenge! We had been planning a major overhaul in the shop -- remerchandising, repricing, refurbishing, all those "re" words -- but we had hoped it would be at our pace and not mandatory!

Please -- we all need your support now more than ever! Lombardi's Italian Restaurant will be closed for at least 10 days. Leathers is just about back to normal as is West Coast Armory. Casual Dining (Lee) is working so hard to get things back to normal, and is still open. Noel, the owner of Graybeard's Gilman Antique Gallery has worked non-stop since Wednesday and is open for business, despite all the work that is going on. We layered 2-3 sandbags along the base to keep the plastic up so we wouldn’t flood if Issaquah Creek went over its banks. Most of us have been through these flood threats before and didn’t think we would actually flood. I kept checking the flood hotline for updates on the creek and it seemed to be okay. It wasn’t until my last call around 6:00 a.m. Thursday that I learned 7th Avenue, (the street behind the shop just to the west) had been closed. We came down an hour or so later to check things out. When we arrived at the entrance of Gilman Square, the parking lot was totally flooded and water was pouring out onto Gilman Blvd. A truck parked in front of Lombardi’s was up to its windows with water. From the street, we couldn’t tell if water had actually risen above the plastic and sandbags in front of our stores or not.

I think it was some time after 1:00 in the afternoon that I was finally able to get to the shop without water going over my knee-high boots. I looked through the window to find nearly a foot of water throughout the shop. Once I pulled back the plastic and moved sandbags I was able to open the front door. This unleashed a virtual river of water. As I stood there in disbelief, I grabbed a small suitcase, bowls with shells, a tray with butter pats, and Christmas ornaments as they floated by. Once the water was through flowing we were left with about 3 inches of standing water. We spent the afternoon using Shop Vacs to suck up all the water and started dragging out rugs and other items we could salvage.

The landlord brought in a company late Thursday afternoon that “cleans up” after disasters like this and assesses the damage to the building. They placed two huge dehumidifiers in the shop that pull the moisture out. It was about 6:00 or so when we had to quit for the day and let the machines start doing their jobs. As necessary, they will use professional equipment to pull out water as well. We do know that all carpeting has to be pulled up and replaced. If the drywall is badly damaged, they will cut it out and replace that as well. The company came back Friday morning to start work again.

We aren’t exactly “Business As Usual” but we are determined and have already started this major restoration project. There's more work than you can ever imagine!

SISTERS is having a flood sale -- everything in the shop is 25% - 75% off.Sister Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12061171746200627424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3971887618243063086.post-43219240852883395412008-08-21T17:19:00.000-07:002008-08-21T17:40:33.062-07:00Estate Sale - Ames Lake/RedmondSo what are you doing this weekend?

We've been working on an estate near Ames Lake for a couple of months, just digging through it all and trying to sort piles and piles of stuff. Not for the faint-hearted, but worth donning some old jeans and boots and coming out! There's something for everybody, that's for sure.

We are advertising the sale for Saturday and Sunday, the 23rd and 24th, from 9 to 4. But... since you're reading this blog, you have my permission to come by tomorrow -- Friday the 22nd, between noon and 6.

Sad story... but we're selling everything we can out of the estate so that the two sons (20ish) have something to remember their dad by. You can't imagine the amount of things here -- it would take a couple of pages to list everything. Check out our website under "Upcoming Estate Sales" and you'll see what we mean!

The address is 3717 289th Ave. NE, Redmond. The best way to find it is to use a Google map. Hope to see you there! If you have questions, please call me -- Patty (206) 914-16150.

http://www.sistersantiques.com/Sister Pattyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12061171746200627424noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3971887618243063086.post-78103428383407259022008-04-16T13:55:00.000-07:002008-12-08T18:51:52.660-08:00GLITZ!

I just love this picture!
